WHAT WE LOVE...

This perfectly formed, pocket-sized Georgian mansion, close to Wetherby yet with wide countryside views, has been carefully updated to offer a smart yet relaxed country house hotel. True, there's a modern wing extension housing the spa and additional bedrooms but that doesn't detract from the colonnaded entrance and creeper-covered façade of the main house. Inside, a sure hand has skilfully blended an understated contemporary look with original features to create a relaxed atmosphere. Generous-sized bedrooms, all with tranquil views, have a sober, modern style while the dining room offers smart modern British cooking. Relax in the terraced Italianate gardens, on a woodland walk or in the small spa and pool.

THE DETAILS

Location

We love the fact we can be exploring historic York, shopping in Harrogate or at the theatre in Leeds, all within 30 minutes' drive of the hotel.

The hotel is 10 minutes' drive outside the market town of Wetherby, where there are plenty of pubs and shops.
By car: the hotel is 4 hours from London and 1 hour 30 mins from Manchester. Free parking is available on-site.
By train: London Kings Cross to York takes 1 hour 50 mins. The hotel is a 35-minute taxi ride from the station. thetrainline.com

Style & Character

People who want a relaxed country house feel yet within easy reach of city attractions will appreciate this hotel; plus anyone looking for a luxurious stop-over on north-south journeys. We love the mix of old and new with the artwork: old portraits in modern frames, and contemporary sculptures in elegantly proportioned hallways.

Service & Facilities

We love being able to step out of the front door and go for a walk. There are wellingtons to borrow, too, if you've forgotten walking shoes.

Rooms

Rooms in the original Georgian building undoubtedly have some of the best views, particularly those overlooking the Wharfe Valley. We like that the rooms don't skimp on the extras, with all offering bathrobes, fresh milk, bottled water and decent desk space as well as pleasant views.

Food & Drink

The dining room, in soft shades of grey with beautiful sash windows, manages to be both elegant yet relaxing. Leaving room for dessert is a must: there's an excellent choice often including Yorkshire favourites such as curd tart, parkin, and fruit crumble.
