WHAT WE LOVE...

This market town hotel unashamedly revolves around food - it sits in the centre of Malton, the self-declared food capital of Yorkshire - and food that is robust, punchy and fad-free. The Talbot's style - in a former coaching inn - is similarly no-nonsense with a solid, and rather quirky, old-school charm: stripped-wood floors, vintage finds, walls crammed with pictures, and surfaces dotted with pot-plants. Flashes of velvet and hot colours give it a bit of pizazz. Bedrooms, spread over three floors and down winding corridors, have a cool, stripped-back feel, with rich colours, bric-a-brac finds and solid, traditional bathroom fittings. There's a large, sofa-stuffed sitting-room, a rambling bar, and a couple of terraces, one overlooking the river.

THE DETAILS

Location

We love the micro-sized Rarebird Gin distillery! Practically opposite the hotel, they give tours if not too busy; certainly tastings are always available. Or book ahead for workshops.

The Talbot is on the edge of Malton town centre, overlooking the River Derwent.
By car: the hotel is 1 hour from Leeds, 2 hours 40 mins from Birmingham and 4 hours 30 mins from London. There is free parking on-site.
By train: London Kings Cross to Malton (via York) takes 2 hours 25 mins. The hotel is a 5-minute walk from the station. thetrainline.com

Style & Character

Greedy foodies will love this place, and its location among the town's bakers and artisan-makers. Plus anyone who prefers a more laidback, hipsterish style to slick good-looks. We love the masses of lush ferns and greenery that sit plumply in terracotta pots and bulbous glass vases on tables and window sills; they give a fresh, homely feel to the rooms.

Service & Facilities

We love the small upper bar with its deep-blue walls, tangerine velvet banquettes and views out onto the street. Dogs are welcome in several dog-friendly bedrooms, and treats, bowl and a blanket are provided. Owners can take their meals in the bar, and staff are happy to advise on local walks.

Food & Drink

The dining room nicely hits the right note of being neither too smart nor too casual, with its pale-green colours, botanical prints, old-school chairs, chunky glasses and plump pots of ferns.
