WHAT WE LOVED...

Sitting above the picturesque mid-Wharfedale village of Burnsall, the aptly named Devonshire Fell Hotel enjoys some of the finest views of this glorious Yorkshire Dales valley. Below sit the village's pretty stone cottages wrapped around the River Wharfe while above stretch fields, latticed with dry-stone walls, rising to fells. It makes a great base for walking. Part of the Bolton Abbey Estate, owned by the Duke of Devonshire (of Chatsworth fame), the Victorian-built hotel surprises with its bold and colourful interiors plus its collection of art, much drawn from the family collection. Bedrooms are light and fresh while the dining room serves up robust Modern British dishes. Dogs are made very welcome, and there's free access to the nearby sister hotel's spa.

Style & Character

Walkers who like their creature comforts will enjoy it here, as will anyone wanting to explore the Yorkshire Dales with a dog-friendly hotel, rather than a pub, as a base - and with access to a spa. We love the mix of artworks; big and bold modern art hang alongside more traditional gilt-framed landscapes.

Service & Facilities

We love coming back from a walk and being able to take a refreshing cup of tea in the conservatory.

Any of the front-facing rooms get our vote for the spoiling views across the valley. Modern art prints or framed art exhibition posters add a vibrant touch, plus all rooms have coffee machines as standard.

Food & Drink

Most items are made in-house, including desserts, scones, cakes and sourdough bread. Treat yourself to afternoon tea with such treats as home-made scones and clotted cream, and lemon meringue pie - vegan alternatives, too.

The Fell Restaurant: award-winning, views of the Dales, locally sourced produce. Open for lunch and dinner. Mains from £35 for two courses.
