WHAT WE LOVE...

This well-established hotel, with its peerless position opposite the famous west end of the Minster, is a firm favourite with British and international guests. A collection of townhouses, it exudes a warm British charm from its light, classical bedrooms, spread over a warren of corridors and staircases, to its all-day well-priced menus. The open-plan ground floor bar-lounge area has the feel of a modern-day inn - stripped-wood floors, leather Chesterfields - and makes the most of a long and narrow space while the dining room capitalises on its Minster views. Although there are few facilities, the hotel scores highly for the warmth and friendliness of the staff who are walking gazetteers of York.

Anyone who wants to be in the historic heart of York at a good-value price will enjoy staying here. The quirky staircases and little passageways and landings have a curious charm.
