WHAT WE LOVE...

In the well-heeled Bootham area, and next to the public school of the same name, this eye-catching Georgian building with its portico and double-height bay, is surprisingly chic and boutique. Public areas are bold and smart in monochrome colours giving a modern, gentleman's club feel, yet still showing off lovely period details. The small restaurant is particularly striking, marrying its lofty arched windows with brasserie styling. Bedrooms, some with Minster views, are sleek affairs in shades of grey, navy and bottle-green with fuss-free furnishings and bold feature walls; not a swag or pelmet in sight. There's a choice of bars, a clubby lounge and large beer garden with toasty 'igloos' for the cooler months.

Style & Character

The hotel suits those who like a modern townhouse style, as opposed to frills and flounces, and who prefer to be out of the city centre. The atrium combines original and modern features to great effect: chequerboard tiled floor, ice-blue walls and exposed light-bulb lamps with a sweeping staircase, plasterwork frieze and gilt-framed portraits.

Service & Facilities

The central atrium, with its chequerboard tiled floor, high stools and tables, sweeping staircase and black grand piano is a great place to people-watch or browse the newspapers.

Rooms

The basement rooms are the funkiest with quirky shapes - one is a windowless former cellar - while rooms in the original building are generally larger than those in the annexe. We love the blown-up photograph of a wet bulldog (the Churchill connection, obviously) shaking itself dry on the walls of the bathrooms.

Small Double, Double & Twin, Superior, Luxury, Prince of Wales Suite
Facilities include: ensuite with shower, free toiletries, TV, free Wi-Fi, tea and coffee tray

Food & Drink

The semi-circular restaurant, with triple arched windows, plasterwork ceiling and cloud-pattern wallpaper, marries original features with modern furnishings beautifully. The dinner menu has a surprisingly good Yorkshire cheese board, while the bar offers a decent selection of bottled craft ales.

Dewsnap's Brasserie: classic British and European dishes, Yorkshire produce, bar snacks. Open for breakfast and dinner, snacks served throughout the day. Mains from £12.95.
The beer garden: outdoor dining, heated, deli boards, wood-fired pizzas. Open every day, pizzas Thurs-Sun. Mains from £10.95.
The Wellington Bar: Yorkshire lager, craft beers, world gins and vodkas, cocktails.
