WHAT WE LOVE...

At the heart of the idyllic Wiltshire village of Ham, that was once home to the Bloomsbury Group, the Crown & Anchor is a pub with rooms owned by a couple of local residents. The wood-panelled bar has plenty of character and every knick knack and framed picture tells a story. On a cold day, a seat beneath the old timber beams and in front of the fire is the place to be. The pub and adjacent cottage house eight comfortable and confidently-styled rooms, and the restaurant serves gastropub fare. The inn appeals to couples looking for a romantic country break in a traditional inn, as much as it does to families and walkers wanting to explore the AONB.

THE DETAILS

Location

We loved the well-documented small- and medium-length walks available from the pub, through farmland and nearby villages. Bring suitable footwear and expect mud!

The inn is located in the middle of the North Wessex Downs. Downton Abbey fans will love that Highclere Castle is 25 minutes by car.
By car: over 1 hour from Bristol, 1 hour 45 minutes from London and 3 hours 30 minutes from Manchester. Free parking on-site.
By train: London Paddington to Hungerford takes under an hour. It's a 10-minute taxi ride to the hotel. thetrainline.com
