WHAT WE LOVE...

A 'restaurant with rooms' in an elegant Victorian townhouse on the edge of the town centre, the Northgate is aiming to be Bury St Edmunds' coolest place to stay and eat - and doesn't do a bad job in what is an increasingly foodie destination. It's part of the East Anglia hotel and restaurant group Chestnut Inns, which has turned a fairly traditional B&B into one of the region's most self-consciously fashionable hotels, deliberately bringing a touch of hipsterish glamour to Bury, both in the cool restaurant and cocktail bar, and in its nine boutique rooms upstairs.

THE DETAILS

Location

Bury is an interesting place to stay, with lots to see and some excellent restaurants, and is also well placed for seeing the best of inland Suffolk. Wandering aimlessly around the town's elegant Georgian centre isn't a bad way to pass the time.

The hotel is a short walk from Bury's town centre, with easy access to the Suffolk countryside and surrounding villages by car.
By car: The hotel is 2 hours from London and Birmingham, 2 hours 30 mins from Brighton and 40 mins from Cambridge. There is free parking for guests.
By train: London Kings Cross to Bury St Edmunds (via Cambridge) takes 1 hour 45 mins. The station is a 10-minute walk from the hotel. thetrainline.com
