WHAT WE LOVE...

First opened in December 2019, Palacio Solecio sits in Málaga's parte vieja and combines the freshness of a relatively new hotel with the pedigree of an historic property. Housed in an 18th-century mansion built for a man who got rich making decks of cards, it's a fitting base for those who wish to play in other ways - partaking in the many pleasures of one of Spain's most underrated cities. Some of the best bars and restaurants are right on your doorstep, but don't overlook the hotel's own excellent onsite fine dining. Balausta's space is just as breathtaking as the food, and here as elsewhere attention to detail is everything, from exquisite dishes full of local flair to evocative design that evokes Andalucían atmosphere at every turn.

THE DETAILS

Location

Come nightfall, the atmosphere in the old town is electric - hop between tapas bars or book ahead for restaurants such as Uvedoble, near the Alcazaba.

In the centre of the Old Town, you're within walking distance of the Alcazaba and the Picasso Museum. A 15-minute will take you to Málaga Park and the beach.
By plane: flights to Málaga from London and Manchester take under 3 hours. The hotel is a 20-minute drive from the airport. Parking costs €29 per day. skyscanner.net

Style & Character

Though the hotel does offer interconnecting rooms for families, this is a grown-up space that will appeal mostly to holidaying couples. We loved the beautiful local detailing in the design, from the typically-Andalucían pebble floor mosaics to specially-commissioned cordovans (leather artworks) in the lobby.

Service & Facilities

The hotel offers a range of packages, some of which include queue-free access to the nearby (and excellent) Picasso Museum.

  • Restaurant
  • Bar
  • Fitness centre
  • Free Wi-Fi

Rooms

Suite 402 has amazing views, art books scattered around its small living room and a gabled roof over its king size bed. The bathrooms have a luxurious feel, from bespoke toiletries and gorgeous geometric tiling to double sinks in some of the bigger rooms.

Palacio Double, Deluxe Double, Palacio Deluxe, Palacio Junior Suite, Tower, Suite Palacio
Facilities include: ensuite bathroom with toiletries, bathrobes and slippers, air conditioning, TV, free Wi-Fi

Food & Drink

From the Málaga Buck cocktail to Balausta's take on the traditional Andalucían desert Bienmesabe, everything is prepared with utmost care and infused with local flavour. We recommend the sublime starter of Russian salad - an enduringly beloved dish in Spain - made with langoustines and crispy malagueña prawns.

Balausta: Michelin-starred restaurant, modern Andalucían cuisine. Open daily from 11am for lunch, dinner and snacks. Main courses from €24.
Cocktail Bar: classic and bespoke cocktails, spirits and wines. Open daily.
