Hotel Review
Gran Hotel Inglés, Madrid, Spain
This is the oldest luxury hotel in Madrid, opened in 1886. In its 20s heyday it saw writers such as Ernest Hemmingway and Virginia Woolf gather with celebrity bullfighters to enjoy its 'modern' luxuries. Uniquely positioned in the heart of Madrid's characterful Barrio de las Letras - a stone's throw from Puerta del Sol, Plaza Mayor, Gran Vía, the Prado Museum and Retiro Park - but tucked away on an unassuming street, the hotel has been completely refurbished with interiors by American designer David Rockwell to bring back all the glamour of the 20s with contemporary comfort. The Casa Lobo restaurant serves excellent Spanish food and wine, while the small Sisley Spa offers specialised treatments.
THE DETAILS
Location
We love walking the narrow neighbouring roads in the evenings when Madrileños spill out of the tapas bars onto the street in noisy conversation.
La Venecia, Madrid's oldest sherry bar is across the street from the hotel - simply perfect!
By plane: there are direct flights to Madrid-Barajas Airport from London (2 hours 20 minutes), Manchester (2 hours 40 minutes) and Edinburgh (2 hours 45 minutes). The hotel is a 20-minute drive from the airport.
Style & Character
This hotel is perfect for romancing couples who will enjoy the in-room tubs. The original 19th-century columns in the central bar are stunning.
