WHAT WE LOVE...

This 17th-century inn occupies a romantically lonely spot above a wooded valley and the country's longest clapper bridge at Tarr Steps. Thanks to its location deep in the Exmoor National Park it is surrounded by unspoiled woods and moorland, so suits walkers and anyone looking for tranquility. The inn is traditional in style while the bedrooms are more modern. This may be a disappointment for some but the rooms are comfortable and have lots of helpful features. The inn's restaurant is a big draw - the cooking is top notch and game dishes are particularly good. The inn becomes a convivial refuge during the day and offers lunches and afternoon teas, to tempt those visiting the bridge in from the cold.

THE DETAILS

Location

The hotel is situated in a rather remote location, so if you're looking to immerse yourself in the wilds of Exmoor, this is exactly where to come.

Tarr Farm is located within Dunkery & Horner Wood National Nature Reserve in west Somerset, near the border with Devon.
By car: around 2 hours from Bristol, 4 hours 30 minutes from Manchester or London. There is free parking on-site.

Style & Character

The hotel is popular with shooting parties, thanks to its location, and there are secure gun cabinets by the beds. We love that the bar has retained its period feel and is still a place of refuge, warmth and comfort from the moor, as it has been for centuries.

Service & Facilities

The thoughtful amenities in the rooms make your stay that little bit more special. Bathrooms come with fluffy robes and vanity products that are a real treat after a long bath.

Double Room

Rooms

The rooms are quite similar but some offer more space in the bedroom, whereas others have baths as well as showers. Check when booking. We like the calming views, which are not dramatic but set the scene, showing a quiet hillside with the river valley below.

Rooms with ensuite bathroom
Facilities include: ensuite bathroom with organic toilteries, Egyptian cotton sheets, TV, DVD player, iPod docking station with radio, tea and coffee-making facilities

Food & Drink

We love the focus on game, which is appropriate for the location. You can expect the meat in such dishes to be cooked perfectly. Our favourite dish is the Creedy Carver free-range duck breast which is tender and delicious, accompanied by black cherry jus and a creamy fondant potato.

Restaurant: relaxed atmosphere, refined pub food, classic flavours with a modern twist, local produce. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Dinner mains from £15.
