The hotel is conveniently located right in the centre, with pretty much everything - shops, places to eat and drink, key sights - close by.

The city's famous Roman baths are a two-minute stroll from the hotel.
By car: the hotel is 2 hours and 30 mins from London and around 40 mins from Bristol.
By train: trains from Bristol take just over 10 minutes. The train from London Paddington is 1 hour and 30 mins. Bath station is a five-minute walk from the hotel. thetrainline.com

Eight is great for visitors to Bath who want an affordable yet stylish city-centre base, but, other than the bar and restaurant, don't need on-site facilities. The hotel's basement bar is fabulous. Dating from medieval times, with a flagstone floor and giant fireplaces either end, it was once a refectory for Bath Abbey's monks.

Eight doesn't try to hide the fact that bedrooms do have to put up with some street noise, so ear plugs are provided by beds.

Our favourite room is Number 15, a Deluxe Double, which has three big sash windows overlooking Abbey Green and a freestanding bath under one of the windows. We love the design of the bathrooms - they all have striking brick-shaped green wall tiles and Victorian-styled patterned floor tiling.

The breakfast is a treat: a choice of coffees of differing strengths, no buffet, homemade granola, and a big choice of tempting cooked dishes. For dinner, the monkfish, served with prawns and clams in a saffron-infused velouté, is particularly tasty.
