Hotel Review
Eight, Bath, Somerset
This characterful townhouse hotel occupies two old buildings, one on a pedestrian lane, the other just round the corner overlooking a picturesque cobbled square. The location is unimprovably central, yards from several of Bath's main sights, with bars, cafés and restaurants right on the doorstep. The unflashy, contemporary design of the 17 bedrooms complements the buildings' period features. While cheapest rooms are small and cosy, others can be fairly palatial; several have a freestanding bath in the body of the room. Eight is also a first-rate, small-scale restaurant. Popular with locals, it serves creative French/Italian dishes sized between starters and main courses.

Style & Character
Eight is great for visitors to Bath who want an affordable yet stylish city-centre base, but, other than the bar and restaurant, don't need on-site facilities. The hotel's basement bar is fabulous. Dating from medieval times, with a flagstone floor and giant fireplaces either end, it was once a refectory for Bath Abbey's monks.
Service & Facilities
Eight doesn't try to hide the fact that bedrooms do have to put up with some street noise, so ear plugs are provided by beds.

Rooms
Our favourite room is Number 15, a Deluxe Double, which has three big sash windows overlooking Abbey Green and a freestanding bath under one of the windows. We love the design of the bathrooms - they all have striking brick-shaped green wall tiles and Victorian-styled patterned floor tiling.
Rooms 1-18
Facilities include: ensuite bathroom, double bed, smart TV, free Wi-Fi, tea and coffee facilities
Food & Drink
The breakfast is a treat: a choice of coffees of differing strengths, no buffet, homemade granola, and a big choice of tempting cooked dishes. For dinner, the monkfish, served with prawns and clams in a saffron-infused velouté, is particularly tasty.
Eight plates: relaxed, modern European cuisine. Open Tuesday-Saturday 3-9.30pm. Plates from £8.50.
The historic bar: cosy, classy, extensive wine and cocktail menu. Open Tuesday- Saturday 12-10pm and Sunday-Monday 12pm to 6pm
