WHAT WE LOVE...

Baslow, an upmarket village on the River Derwent, is home to several places to stay, including this - one of the Peak District's finest hotels and an ideal choice for romantic weekends and special occasion trips. You feel instantly more relaxed as you turn in through the gates and wind your way up a tree-shaded driveway to reach the Grade II-listed hall. Although built in the early 20th century, it was designed to mimic a nearby Jacobean manor house and does so convincingly, with its projecting gabled wings, stone mullioned windows and wood-panelled walls. People come here to feel looked after and Fischer's delivers, with luxurious bedrooms, excellent food (the restaurant draws diners from far and wide) and beautifully tended gardens to relax in.

Style & Character

It's perfect for country-loving foodies, who can walk the hills by day then enjoy a first-rate dinner in the evening. We love the modern take on country-house style: the designers have used high-quality fabrics and managed to keep a traditional feel without tipping into chintzy overload.

Service & Facilities

At certain times of year, Fischer's runs guided foraging days where you can discover wild ingredients in the Derbyshire countryside.

Food & Drink

Much of the food is sourced close to home, including vegetables and fruit grown on-site or foraged nearby, and honey from local hives. Despite its inland location, the kitchen knows how to handle seafood - a John Dory main was perfectly cooked and deliciously sauced.

The restaurant: 3 AA Rosettes, smart, modern British cuisine, fine dining, tasting menus. Open for lunch and dinner Weds-Sun. Three-course dinner menu £78.50 per person.
