WHAT WE LOVE...

The views of the North York Moors' striking Roseberry Topping - likened to a miniature Matterhorn - that rises up behind this country pub are as good a reason as any for choosing it. The handsome stone 18th-century building, with bedrooms in two neighbouring cottages, makes a good base for walkers or for those who want easy access to both the moors and the North Yorkshire coast. Very much a pub-with-rooms, it offers a cheery welcome - to dogs, too - in its open-plan bar/dining area, with an all-day menu of filling, classic dishes. Bedrooms are simple and fuss-free, some with beams, others with moorland views, and all with plenty of hot water to ease aching limbs after a day's walking. There are two areas of outside seating, and it all comes at a good-value price.

Style & Character

It suits both those who like a pub atmosphere with good comfort and service levels, and outdoorsy types who want the assurance of filling food and a good night's sleep. This is a pub-with-rooms, and we loved the fact it doesn't pretend otherwise.

Service & Facilities

We enjoyed returning from the walk up Roseberry Topping to a cup of tea - or pint, if you prefer - on the rear terrace and gazing up at its miniature Matterhorn-like peak.

Rooms

Number 2 is the Premium Room, with a conservatory-style glass ceiling, which would be lovely in summer. The bedrooms are in two adjoining, cute-looking pantile-roof sandstone cottages - close but away from any pub noise.

Facilities include: ensuite bathroom with toiletries, hairdryer, tea and coffee facilities, iron and ironing board, TV, free Wi-Fi

Food & Drink

We loved the cheery service where staff always have time to chat, no matter how busy they are. Pace yourself so you have room for pudding, with a menu that includes most people's favourites: jam roly-poly, lemon posset, sticky toffee pudding and a seasonal fruit crumble with custard.

The King's Head: pub and restaurant, classic British fare and local ales. Seasonal menus, mains include venison loin and homemade pie. All-day dining, open daily. Sunday roasts served 12-4pm.
