WHAT WE LOVE...

An upmarket boutique hotel in a 15th-century listed manor house in the heart of the New Forest. The handsome half-timber Tudor building boasts large ground-floor bay windows, added in the Victorian era, which throw plenty of natural light into the public rooms at the front. Curl up with a book in front of a roaring log fire in the lounge or tuck into some first-class cuisine in the bright and airy restaurant. The archaic gated lift, rumoured to be the oldest in Europe, transports you to the upper rooms, which are individually styled. Expect antique wooden bed frames and furniture, feature wallpaper, vintage telephones and botanical prints with contemporary wetrooms. Outside, a pretty walled garden is a peaceful spot for afternoon tea.

Style & Character

The hotel is perfect for city folk looking for a refined forest getaway. We love the massive Tudor stone fireplace in reception, with fierce-looking lion gargoyles.

Rooms

There is nothing historic about the bathrooms, which are slick with metro tiles, rainfall showers and sage green painted walls. The King Rufus suite, at the rear of the hotel, comes with a separate lounge, twin sinks, clawfoot bath and walk-in shower in the bathroom, and a lovely antique sleigh bed.

Facilities include: ensuite bathroom, luxury toiletries, double bed, TV, desk, Wi-Fi, tea and coffee facilities

Food & Drink

We love the passion with which the kitchen champions local produce, with all the meat traceable from farm to fork and fruit and veg from a nearby grower. Our favourite dish is pan-roasted saddle of venison, which is served with a chestnut mushroom suet pudding, roasted celeriac and parsnip purée.

The Bar&Grill: relaxed atmosphere, modern British dishes, fine dining, fresh fish. Open daily for dinner. Mains from £16.
The Lounge: Afternoon and Cream Tea, cocktails, fine wines, gin menu.
