WHAT WE LOVE...

This 18th-century house was once the home of shipbuilder Henry Adams, the Master builder on a host of ships for Nelson's navy, including three which fought at Trafalgar - Agamemnon, Swiftsure and Euryalus. The property is right on Buckler's Hard in Beaulieu, where the ships were built before being launched into the river that runs alongside. It proves a pretty setting for a hotel: rooms look out on a row of redbrick cottages (which are available to rent) or over the Beaulieu river. Inside many original features remain: grand fireplaces, oak beams and narrow staircases. Rooms are luxurious with antique furniture and rich colours. The two AA-Rosette Riverview Restaurant serves up modern British cuisine in a fine-dining setting, while the Yachtsman Bar has tables spilling towards the river.

THE DETAILS

Location

We love sitting outside with a gin and tonic watching the comings and goings on the river.

Located on the side of Lord Beaulieu's estate and flanked by a river, the hotel couldn't really be in a better spot. Plus, there are good transport links making the house easily accessible.
By car: From London, the drive takes just over 2 hours via the M3. From Southampton, the journey takes around 30 minutes.
By train: The closest train station to the hotel is Brockenhurst. The train runs regularly from London Waterloo and takes around 1 hour 30 minutes. From Southampton, the journey is a mere 15 minutes to Brockenhurst station. A taxi from the station takes 20 minutes. thetrainline.com
