WHAT WE LOVE...

Family-run since it opened 80 years ago, this charming hotel with 91 rooms and two suites spread across eight 17th-century townhouses definitely stands out due to its striking, if not eccentric, colourful décor. Supremely comfortable throughout, with uplifting lounge and bar areas, it's located within the historic canal belt, with easy access to lots of bars, cafés, restaurants and shops, as well as the main sights. It has an old-fashioned air, and service is friendly and warm. Each guest room has its own character, with lively wallpapers and plush furnishings. You might get lovely, intricate blue wallpaper, or a light brown colour scheme perhaps. Bikes are available to hire and there's a gym and garage.

THE DETAILS

Location

From our window, we watched the world go by on the beautiful Singel canal.

A 10-minute walk along the canal will take you to Dam Square, the shoping district and the Royal Palace.
By plane: direct flights from London and Manchester take around 1 hour 15 minutes. The hotel is a 30-minute drive from Schiphol airport and a 15-minute walk from central station. Parking costs €55 per day. skyscanner.net
