WHAT WE LOVE...

Despite the misleading name - there's neither a beach nor a yacht club here - this small clifftop hotel appeals to travellers touring the island and guests who like being close to the airport and VR1 motorway. Three pools, including a large and photogenic seawater one built into the rocks, provide the entertainment along with a tennis court, fitness centre and spa treatments. The style is bright and breezy seaside with maritime art, potted plants and sweeping views over the Atlantic Ocean. Rooms are spacious and unfussy with all the expected facilities and the restaurant serves a range of Mediterranean-style dishes. Some guests come for a night, others stay a week enjoying the sea air and swimming.

THE DETAILS

Location

We love the distant view across the ocean to the huge and enigmatic Ilhas Desertas, three uninhabited islands that rise to 1,450ft and change appearance depending on the weather.

The hotel sits on cliffs on Madeira's east coast, near Santa Cruz and right by the island's airport.
By plane: there are direct flights to Madeira from London and Manchester (4 hours). The hotel is a 5-minute drive from the airport. skyscanner.net

Style & Character

The low-key, unpretentious style keeps a stay here simple and restful and the rooms are well-equipped and straightforward to use. It's ideal for anyone with an early flight, plane-spotters, golfers and fans of swimming pools built into the rocks.

Service & Facilities

We enjoyed knocking a ball about on the elderly tennis court with an artificial grass surface - equipment can be borrowed from reception.

Rooms

The ground floor superior rooms, which cost less than the upper level premium ones, do the job perfectly. Or if it's a one night stop, the garden view rooms in Villa Olga can be better value. Balconies and patios are a decent size with a table and chairs - a good place to read a book in peace.

Facilities include: ensuite bath or shower, Molton Brown toiletries, bathrobe and slippers, hairdryer, TV, free Wi-Fi

Food & Drink

Our young, chatty waiter who explained unfamiliar dishes and accommodated off-menu requests with a smile. We enjoyed a starter of bolo de caco (warm Madeiran bread with garlic butter) followed by some 'fish of the day' swordfish steak with stuffed courgettes and a chilled glass of house white wine.

Hibiscus: Madeiran and Mediterranean cuisine. Buffet breakfasts and à la carte dining. Open every day.
