WHAT WE LOVE...

If you love to explore historic cities, this popular boutique hotel has a winning location in the centre of old Funchal. Around half the guests are British visitors taking a short sunshine break who appreciate its relaxed vibe, no-trouble rooms and the confident cooking at O Calhau restaurant. A crowning rooftop terrace offers views of the historic cathedral that it's named after and there's also a small indoor pool and spa. Step outside and you'll find narrow, pedestrianised streets lined with inviting eateries, leafy squares with vivid flora and plenty of absorbing museums and monuments to discover. Foodies will enjoy the bountiful displays of Madeiran produce in the Mercado dos Lavradores while night owls can party in the numerous bars selling poncha, a local drink made with rum and fruit juice.

THE DETAILS

We love stepping out of the front door to be plunged into a stimulating historic quarter with plenty to admire from ornate shopfronts to bakeries selling Portugal's trademark pastéis de nata (custard tarts).

Boutique hotel in old town Funchal, beside the cathedral and near the shops and historic sights.
By plane: there are direct flights to Madeira from London and Manchester (4 hours). The hotel is a 25-minute drive from the airport. skyscanner.net

Style & Character

Ideal for couples and friends on city breaks, non-drivers and lovers of a roof terrace with a bar. Families are welcome but there are no special rooms or facilities. This is a quirky hotel where you never stop noticing things, from an eye-catching portrait to a vintage radiogram or a sign declaring 'Some secrets are not too delicious to share'.

It's worth paying a bit more for one of the larger Standard Plus or Deluxe room with a street view and on the top floors. This is a vibrant hotel that embraces inner city living - expect to hear people in the streets below and the cathedral clock marking the passage of time.

Food & Drink

"I am the drinks menu!" explains the genial barman on the roof terrace - meaning there's no cocktail list and he'll create whatever you fancy. Nice. A simple lunch of caprese salad followed by grilled tuna served on a hot volcanic stone is lovely.

O Calhau: Mediterranean and Portuguese cuisine. Mains include veal carpaccio and octopus with chickpea purée. Open daily 11am-11pm.
Cosi Scoozi: buffet breakfasts, pizza and pasta.
Rooftop: drinks and cocktails.
