Hotel Review
The Savoy, Strand, London
Still one of the great London hotels and with a history to match. Here, tradition is all - The Savoy opened in 1889 - and that's why it remains so popular and highly regarded; in a world of constant change, guests can count on the familiar and the reassuring. A dramatic blend of the Edwardian and Art Deco, the hotel was originally built by the theatrical and opera impresario, Richard D'Oyly Carte, of Savoy Theatre fame. Expect lovely bedrooms and perfect service, but chief attractions include the American Bar, Savoy Grill by Gordon Ramsay and the chef's newly opened River Restaurant. To cap it all, there's also a small swimming pool - what better way to start the day?

Style & Character
This hotel suits anyone with a love of tradition and a sense of occasion. It's a place to indulge - be that in the spa, or over dinner. We loved the impressively theatrical Beaufort Bar and decorative touches such as the Red Lift, which dates from when the hotel opened.
Service & Facilities
The indoor 10m pool is housed in a light-filled atrium; the best place to recover before, or after, a day in the city.

Rooms
The generously proportioned Junior Suite River Balcony is rather special with panoramic view of the Thames. Extravagant as it might sound, we liked having a butler available - to iron a shirt, for instance - for the suites.

The American Bar (the oldest surviving cocktail bar in Britain) can't be missed for its signature cocktails and buzzy atmosphere. The beef Wellington in the Savoy Grill is renowned and not to be missed.
The River Restaurant: seafood restaurant. Panoramic river views. All-day menu, open daily.
The Savoy Grill: Art Deco dining room. Classic dishes including beef wellington and lobster thermidor. Open daily, lunch and dinner.
