Hotel Review
The Academy Hotel, London
Contemporary London meets Georgian style in this gorgeously imagined boutique hotel in the heart of Bloomsbury. Since being taken over by the YTL Hotels group, the once uninspiring Academy has been transformed. It now has a proper five-star feel with an acclaimed New York designer managing to combine the old and the new with artistry and elegance. What's more the literary traditions of the area - and the Bloomsbury Set - have been maintained in the Library and with numerous books dotted around the place. Bedrooms too are similarly impressive, while downstairs you will find no formal restaurant, as such, but a super-cool bar, a breakfast room and a lovely Refectory and Courtyard (plus the Library) - where you can order light meals. It all makes a winning proposition.
THE DETAILS
Location
We love the hotel's excellent, central location and being able to pop into British Museum just as it opens in the morning.
The Academy is in Bloomsbury, with the theatres and pubs of the West End a short walk away.
By car: the hotel is 4 hours from Manchester, 2 hours 30 mins from Birmingham and 7 hours from Glasgow. There is street parking nearby.
By train: Goodge Street and Russell Square tube stations are both around 5 minutes' walk away. Kings Cross and Euston stations are 15 minutes away in a taxi. thetrainline.com
Style & Character
Design-conscious guests and literary types will like it here; there are books all around the hotel, including novels by Virginia Woolf and E.M. Forster. The Library is a place you'll definitely want to curl up with a book, and it leads on to one of two hotel terraces.
Service & Facilities
We love searching for books we've not read in the Library, and the "Book of the Month" idea - with paper copies available as well as on the Academy Kindle.

Rooms
There's a great range of rooms and options for single travellers. The Bloomsbury Suite is rather special - spacious and thoughtfully laid out - and we like the personalised bar of chocolate.

Food & Drink
The Alchemy Bar, part of which is canopied, serves refreshingly imaginative cocktails and leads on to the pretty courtyard. We love the indulgent afternoon tea, which is a nod to the celebrated Chinese author Lao She's novel Mr Ma and Son.
The Refectory: breakfast, Asian and British-inspired afternoon tea, light lunches. Afternoon tea served daily 12-6pm. From £25 per person.
The Alchemy Bar: bespoke cocktails, speciality gins, wines, champagne.
