WHAT WE LOVE...

This long-established inn, in the less touristy, soft-green Eskdale valley in the western Lake District, is popular with walkers, whether serious hikers or more leisurely strollers. Its distinctive white-washed front is set back from the narrow valley road, and its beer garden is full of noise and banter in the summer months. Beamed and flagged interiors include a dining-room, snug and main bar - which has an airy, more contemporary feel and is the venue for occasional live music nights. Food is above average for a pub, including home-made pizzas and flatbreads, as well as the classics. Bedrooms are simple and fuss-free, and all with glorious views. And you're always guaranteed a cheery welcome.

THE DETAILS

Location

Apart from walks - including Harter Fell and Scafell - the main attraction is the little Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway, which steams on a former iron-ore route to coastal Ravenglass.

The Woolpack is in a secluded spot in the Eskdale Valley, surrounded by Lakeland walks and close to Scafell Pike.
By car: The hotel is just under 3 hours from Newcastle, 2 hours 30 mins from Manchester, 3 hours from Glasgow and just under 5 hours from London.
By train: The hotel is a 30-minute taxi ride from Bootle station. Trains run from Manchester Piccadilly (via Barrow-in-Furness), London Euston (via Lancaster) and Edinburgh (via Carlisle). thetrainline.com

Style & Character

With its frills-free bedrooms, robust food and cheery bars, the inn is geared to walkers and outdoors-lovers, whether singles, couples or families. Nothing beats relaxing with a cuppa and a slice of cake round a cockle-warming fire after a long day's walk.

Being able to check walking routes with people who know the fells well is a real bonus. Dogs are allowed, and can go anywhere in the pub apart from the dining room and adjoining lounge.

Rooms

Although one room has a whirlpool bath for extra indulgence, we like No 4 the best, with its sofa and front-facing views. Waking up to glorious views of fields and fells, even when raining, is a fine kick-start to the day.

Food & Drink

Breakfast is excellent, with homemade yogurt, poached fruit and home-baked ham, plus cooked-to-order dishes including scrambled egg and smoked sea trout as well as a full grill. We love eating dinner in the cosy snug while being warmed by a toasty fire and glass of Shiraz.

Hardknott Bar & Kitchen: British pub classics, curries, small plates, wood-fired pizzas (Fri-Mon). Open daily for breakfast 8-11am, lunch 12-3pm, and dinner Mon-Sat 5-8pm, Sunday 5-7pm.
