The Ryebeck, Bowness-on-Windermere, Lake District
WHAT WE LOVE...
Tucked away down a private drive, but only five minutes from bustling Bowness, this Edwardian manor house feels almost in the country. While it's a large house, and has been carefully modernised, it still has an unfussy and welcoming feel - no flashy designer excesses or artful arrangements. Bedrooms, a few with lake views, have a modern country feel, and some are dog-friendly. The two big draws, apart from the peaceful setting, are the lake-view terrace and the modern bistro-style restaurant in the conservatory, a room that also captures those views. Awarded two AA rosettes, the food is simple modern British with confident flavour combinations. The hotel makes a low-key stylish retreat whether you want to get out on the hills or explore at a gentler pace.

Location
Blackwell, a superb example of the Arts and Crafts style and with cracking lake views, is just a 10-minute walk along the road - and there's a tearoom, too!
Linthwaite House, with a Simon Rogan restaurant, is a 10-minute walk away, while lake cruises and the car ferry to the western shores are a five-minute drive away.
By car: 1 hour 30 minutes from Manchester, 3 hours from Edinburgh and just under 5 hours from London. There is free parking on-site.
By train: trains run from Manchester Piccadilly (just over 1 hour), London Euston (3 hours) and Edinburgh (2 hours) to Oxenholme Lake District station. The hotel is a 25-minute taxi ride from the station. thetrainline.com
Style & Character
The Ryebeck is perfect for people who want a modern country house feel in comfortable but not startling surroundings, with contemporary food and easy access to Lakeland attractions. We love being so close to the lake and a potter around bustling Bowness, but still able to quickly retreat to the welcoming calm of the hotel.
Service & Facilities
Witnessing the sun set from the terrace, a little glass of something in hand, is a real highlight. Several rooms - some with patios - can take dogs, and bed, bowl and treats are provided. Dogs are allowed anywhere where food isn't being served.

Rooms
The second floor rooms in particular have wonderful views, either of the gardens or lake. The Bath House products, made with natural ingredients in Cumbria's Sedbergh, are one of our favourite treats to find in a hotel bathroom. Or any bathroom, come to that.

Food & Drink
The conservatory restaurant, with its bistro styling and lake views, has a relaxed buzz - a refreshing change from many country house hotels. Do save room for pudding; it's all homemade and often a light and modern interpretation of classics, such as an apple terrine crumble with toasted barley ice cream.
The Ryebeck: relaxed fine dining, modern British cuisine, bold flavours. Open 12-5pm and 6-8.30pm Monday-Saturday, 12-8pm Sunday for Sunday lunch. Two-course dinner £29, three courses £36.
