WHAT WE LOVE...

Don't be surprised if a duck waddles up for a nibble of your Ploughmans as you soak up the peace and quiet at The Woolpack. Across the lane from the atmospheric 16th-century pub, sheep graze around the ancient St Matthews church, paying no attention to the views of the surrounding marshes that lead down to the Channel and beyond to France. Looking at fellow diners enjoying vast platters of local seafood with Kentish wines, sat at wooden tables by overflowing planters of geraniums, jasmine and ivy, with the scent of bread baking in a wood-fired oven in the air, it's hard to imagine the Woolpack in its former life - as a hotbed of pirates and wool smugglers.

THE DETAILS

Location

We love the sense of going back in time that you feel as soon as you arrive in this little corner of England.

The hotel is sandwiched between two Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and a short drive from the popular beach at Camber Sands.
By car: The Woolpack is 1 hour 45 minutes from London and Brighton, and around 30 minutes from Dover.
By train: Fast trains runs from London St Pancras to Ashford International (35 mins). From there, take an 8 minute connection to Ham Street, followed by a 5 minute taxi to the hotel. thetrainline.com

Style & Character

The Woolpack is perfect for urban types after a romantic break in a dreamy countryside bolthole. We love the authentic shabby chic style - like the Kentish gin collection stored in an antique dresser, and breakfasts laid out on an old butcher's block

Service & Facilities

The well-attended duck races hosted by The Woolpack in summer, as well as gigs by local bands, quizzes and charity events, are brilliant.

  • Free Wi-Fi

Rooms

Our favourite room is Honeychild, with its bath-for-two set on a bed of turf by the bedroom window, dairy urns for bedside tables and a cow's head above the bed. Romney Marsh Wool toiletries up the luxury ante - while staying true to The Woolpack's sheep farming heritage.

Honeychild, Josephine, Frederick, Niddy and Noddy
Facilities include: double bed, ensuite bathroom with tub and shower, luxury toiletries, bathrobes, towels, iron, free Wi-Fi, hairdryer

Food & Drink

Slap-up breakfasts, best enjoyed al fresco in the morning sunshine overlooking the church, are served until midday. We love the indulgent Kentish pork platter: slow roasted pork belly, ham hock suet pudding and devils on horseback, with tart Bramley apple purée.

The Woolpack: hearty pub meals from local produce, snacks, wood-fired pizzas, Sunday roasts. Mains from £9. Open for lunch and dinner, Wednesday-Sunday.
