WHAT WE LOVE...

This hotel, reconstructed from the historic steelworks, is located at the centre of Reykjavik's booming creative quarter, and in an ideal position for exploring the capital and its numerous sights, restaurants, bars and shops. Using natural and neutral colours and materials including plenty of timber, concrete and metal, a funky industrial chic has been created, spiced up with 1970s retro furniture, but not without pockets of cosiness and calm. As well as 195 comfortable guest rooms, its lively restaurant and bar Héðinn (named after the steelworks that used to occupy the building) focuses on seafood but also offers a good range of other Icelandic and international dishes too.

THE DETAILS

Location

The hotel's location means you can explore much of Reykjavikwithin a short walk from the front door, and there's no need to navigate public transport.

The hotel is in Vesturbær on the western side of the city, in easy reach of the centre's shops and bars.
By plane: there are direct flights to Reykjavík from London (3 hours). The hotel is a 40-minute drive from the airport. flyplay.com

Style & Character

Suitable for both leisure and business travellers of all ages - we love the funky retro-industrial feel.

Service & Facilities

We love the cocktails: imaginative and named after the seven deadly sins (gluttony, envy etc.) and virtues (faith, hope, love).

Rooms

The rooms are all pretty similar but those with a good view of the water are best. We love the crisp, simple industrial look of the interior design.

Food & Drink

The breakfast buffet has a good, quite large selection, including pickled fish, yoghurt and granola - and even cod liver oil, a local preference. At dinner, the beet carpaccio - baked beetroot with smoked mushroom purée, goat's cheese, hazelnuts and raspberries - is a healthy, tasty dish.

Héðinn Kitchen & Bar: seasonal cooking, cocktails. Dishes include grilled monkfish and beef tenderloin. Open daily for lunch and dinner. Mains from KR5490.
