WHAT WE LOVE...

An impeccably styled Victorian seaside villa right on the beach at Westover, just south of the New Forest. The mansion was built in 1897 for the electricity magnate Alexander Siemens and it's a fine example of Arts and Crafts architecture. Inside you can enjoy stunning original features; such as Pre-Raphaelite fireplaces and stained glass, oak-panelled walls and parquet floors. The glorious gardens roll down to the sea and are surrounded by pine trees and wild grassland. Enjoy a gin and a game of corn hole on the terrace (you have to get a bag of corn in a hole) before retiring to the restaurant for some hearty upmarket pub food - a Malaysian curry, perhaps, or lager battered fish and chips.

Style & Character

The Beach House is perfect for lovers of Victoriana wanting a seaside getaway - we love details such as the hand-painted floral tiles and the framed butterfly prints.

The shelf of 1940s orange Penguin Classics in the library is a nice touch.

Rooms

The Alexander Sieman room is very special. With a four-poster bed and in-room copper roll-top bath, it has fabulous views out to the Needles in the Isle of Wight. We love the Victorian short-story pamphlets in every room that are just a bit different from the usual interiors mags (although you get those, too).

Family Rooms, Standard Double, Superior Double, Luxury Double
Facilities include: ensuite bathroom with shower, free toiletries, hairdryer, Smart TV, digital radio, desk, tea and coffee facilities, free Wi-Fi

Food & Drink

We love the unusual breakfast menu that includes Middle Eastern "Shakshuka" - eggs or avocado in chunky spiced tomato sauce - and spicy beans with scrambled tofu with wilted greens. The coffee shop in the dramatic entrance hall serves up delicious hunks of homemade cake.

The Restaurant: all-day dining, Bistro-style menu, British pub classics, fresh fish, burgers, sandwiches, Sunday roasts. Open daily. Mains starting at £11.95.
