WHAT WE LOVE...

A restored 15th-century palace made of creamy Dalmatian stone is the setting for this refined boutique hotel. Bang in the centre of Šibenik's car-free medieval old town, the Heritage Hotel Life Palace really gives you a sense of the city's timelessness and long history. There are only 17 rooms, each blending modern comforts with a reined-in Renaissance style in a way that doesn't feel too over the top. Its café terrace spilling out into the square in front is one of the city's most convivial meeting places for coffee and top-class homemade cakes. Tucked away within its terracotta roof is a tiny but cute little spa with windows overlooking the square. Boutique is an overused word, but it suits this elegant place.
