WHAT WE LOVE...

Imagine holidaying in a country estate that's next to a beach and you are somewhere near to appreciating the appeal of a stay at three-star Hacienda San Jorge. The brainchild of the father of tourism on La Palma, Don Francisco García Rodriguez, it was an example of sustainable tourism before the concept existed. His son has succeeded him in the family business. Capital Santa Cruz de la Palma used to be the third biggest port in the Spanish empire after Cádiz and Antwerp. Chestnut trees were introduced to the island for their wood used in shipbuilding. You can sit on the sofa of La Verdad, wrecked on coral reefs in Bermuda en route to Cuba in 1899, in the lobby.
