WHAT WE LOVE...

This attractive 18th-century red-brick building in the heart of the beautiful village of Brill makes a great base for those wanting a rural weekend escape. JRR Tolkien based the village of Bree on Brill, which has an attractive old church and is pleasant to stroll through. With lovely walks on the doorstep, a bar area that is full of character, outstanding restaurant food and very pleasant guest rooms indeed, you are likely to want to return to this idyll that is comfortably close to both London and Oxford. Local, seasonal produce is prioritised, and indeed the gifted chef uses a host of ingredients from the Pointer's own farm and kitchen garden, as well as those provided by other local producers and game estates, as well as fish from Brixham.

Food & Drink

Every course was fab, from the starters such as Gochujang pork belly with sesame, spring onion and soy sauce, to the desserts, such as the sticky toffee pudding with salted caramel ice cream, which had an incredibly tasty sauce to die for. The coq au vin, with white wine, bacon, mushroom, carrots and mash was a tasty, hearty meal.

The Pointer: classic pub favourites, locally sourced produce. All-day dining, open daily. Mains from £14.50.
