Hotel Review
Long Crendon Manor, Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire
You'll probably drive straight past on first arriving here, not believing you would be staying in somewhere so grand. Driving through the ancient entrance arch, you find yourself in a courtyard flanked by the most gorgeous ancient buildings. The manor dates back to the Norman conquest and was given to Sir Walter Giffard after his involvement in the Battle of Hastings. The interior, choc full of antiques, is lived-in and rough around the edges in places rather than sleek and modern, but this just adds to the character and charm, and helps you realise you are staying in an extraordinary historic gem. Owners Tim and Sue Soar are very attentive and friendly and full of anecdotes and information. Within a charming rural Buckinghamshire village, there's a large garden with a pool, tennis court and small maze. Unsurprisingly, it has been used as a backdrop to numerous films and TV, including The Woman in Black, My Cousin Rachel and Midsomer Murders.

Style & Character
The Manor is ideal for those wanting to stay in a place that exudes ancient history rather than an overly-revamped old building that is swish and modern on the inside but which as a result lacks character. We loved staying in a property steeped in history, with direct links to the Battle of Hastings and the Magna Carta.

Rooms
The Yellow Bedroom, so-called due to the yellow panelling along one wall, is bright and spacious and furnished in a French style. Overlooking the apple orchard, it is in truth a suite, having also an ensuite dressing-room with adjoining shower room. Bright colours - vivid blues, yellows and red - are used in both the textiles and décor.

Food & Drink
The bacon and sausages were from the Manor - and you can certainly taste the difference. We loved the English breakfast, tasty, expertly cooked and served in impressive surroundings.
Dining Room: intimate, characterful room, serving breakfast daily.
The Stables: converted stable, now an artisan bakery with adjoining farm shop. Open daily from 9am.
