WHAT WE LOVE...

Built as a grand family home in the 1600s, now owned by the National Trust but once the home of exiled King Louis XVIII, this elegant Grade I-listed stately home features both Jacobean and Georgian facades, a magnificent great hall and elegant drawing rooms. It's set in 90 acres of beautifully undulating grounds laid out by a follower of Capability Brown, with a ruined Gothic church and a converted 18th century coach house that houses an excellent spa and gym. There's a host of well-chosen oil paintings and illustrations on the walls, decorative ceilings boasting original plasterwork, palatial fireplaces, an antiquarian library and ornate chandeliers. There are 30 very comfortable bedrooms and suites in the main house, many with four-posters, and there's a separate four-bedroom rectory with a private garden and outdoor pool as well as further accommodation at the coach house.

The elegant restaurant, with tables with crisp starched tablecloths, candlelight and impeccable service under beautiful domed ceilings really helps make this an unforgettable meal. The loin of venison with smoked and braised shoulder of lamb just melts in the mouth, and was servied with red cabbage, buttered swede, crispy cavolo nero and blackcurrant jus - simply divine.
