WHAT WE LOVE...

Hard by the architecturally striking Bristol Cathedral, the Bristol Marriott Royal occupies a commanding position in the city. A recent multi-million pound restoration has spruced up the place and brought back a grandstanding appeal - it's a place with an storied history too, Winston Churchill and Cary Grant both stayed here. A red-uniformed concierge sets the tone in the marble-floored lobby and you might need him, as this is a sizeable hotel - with more than 260 rooms - and it's easy to lose your bearings. However, the drawing room/tea lounge provides a quiet escape. The restaurant is franchised to the Miller & Carter steakhouse chain - and offers hearty fare in vibrant surroundings.

THE DETAILS

Location

We love browsing in the eclectic range of shops along Park Street before reaching the City Museum & Art Gallery.

The Harbourside, with its restaurants, bars, the Bristol Aquarium and Arnolfini art gallery, is a 5-minute walk from the hotel.
By car: around 1 hour 30 minutes from Exeter, 3 hours from London and 4 hours from York.
By train: trains run to Bristol Temple Meads from Exeter St Davids (1 hour), London Paddington (1 hour 40 minutes) and York (3 hours 50 minutes). The hotel is a 15-minute taxi-ride from the station. thetrainline.com

Style & Character

There is ample to satisfy corporate and leisure guests, but the drawing room/tea lounge is relaxing place to hang out. The Palm Court room with its three-storey Bath stone walls, statues and stained glass ceiling is a highlight.

We love the red-uniformed concierge, who is always ready with advice on what to do in the city.

  • Restaurant
  • Gym
  • Room service
  • Free Wi-Fi in public areas

Rooms

The artwork on the bedroom walls is a nice touch - one room has a striking image of Jimi Hendrix by a local artist. The Four Poster Suite has a king-size bed and great views of the city.

Deluxe, Superior, Royal Superior rooms, Junior, Royal Junior, One-Bedroom, Four Poster, Royal, Two-Bedroom suites, Royal Apartment
Facilities include: king or queen-size bed, ensuite bathroom with Acca Kappa toilteries, TV, tea and coffee-making facilities

Food & Drink

Franchised restaurants don't always work in hotels but this one does and the striking bar continues the bold colour theme. The 50-day aged filet mignon is very tender while the wild Atlantic scallops tick the box as an ideal starter.

Miller & Carter: smart casual, steakhouse. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Steaks from £16.95.
